History

The distant ancestors of Lanyu residents have two legends: stone and bamboo. When the southern gods created Xiaolanyu and Lanyu and then returned to Lanyu Island, they touched huge rocks on the mountain. The boulder fell into the sea and split into two halves. The male god Nemotacolulito walked out of the cracked stone and walked to the mountains to shake the giant bamboo. Another male god, Nemotacoluga wuly, burst out of the bamboo. One day, the male god who walked out of the cracked stone gave birth to a man and a woman from the knees of his left and right feet. The male god who walked out of bamboo also gave birth to a man and a woman from his knees. The children of the two gods became married and began to develop Yami (Tao) Human society and culture.

  • Manoyotoyon. (Festival to stop eating flying fish)

Held around the Moon Festival every year, it is the last of the flying fish-related festivals. In addition to family reunion and blessing, it was also the last time to enjoy dried flying fish. After eating, the remaining dried fish will be discarded.
