History

  • Ooshen Event
The reason is that the indigenous of the Seediq ethnic group were dissatisfied with the Japanese ruling authorities for a long time tyranny, and the leader Mona Rudo led a joint attack to attack the model settlement Ooshen established by the Japanese side, taking advantage of the Ooshen Public School to hold a sports meeting Assault and kill the Japanese. Immediately after the incident, the Japanese mobilized military and police forces to forcefully suppress them with weapons such as airplanes, mountain cannons, and poisonous gas. Although the Seediq tribe in the incident withdrew after the attack was successful, they were still not against the powerful Japanese forces. As the leader of the uprising, Mona Rudo committed suicide by drinking a bomb. The tribes involved in the operation were genocated several times, and hundreds of tribesmen hanged themselves collectively, preferring to die. The outbreak shocked the Japanese government and the international community. In addition to causing major challenges to Taiwan's governor's office's management of Tibet, it also caused the resignation of high-level officials such as the then Governor Ishizuka Hidezo and General Secretary Renjian Jiro.

Ritual (in Seediq language)

The supernatural belief (utux) of the Seediq people is the most important belief in ancestral spirits. The Seediq people believe that ancestral spirits will affect the disaster and blessings in their lives, and they must abide by the ancestor's instructions and code of conduct. Therefore, the Seediq people attach great importance to the worship of ancestor spirits. After the 50s (1960s) of the Republic of China, the Seediq people accepted the concept of Western religion, and most of them believed in Christianity. Various traditional rituals were almost stopped. Until recently, due to the increase of cultural awareness, some tribes began to resume ancestral sacrifices.
