History

Regarding the origin of Kanaknavu, there is a legend.

About a mother named Niun who lives with her son Paramaci. The life is difficult and lonely, so her mother often sighs in front of her son, lamenting the vicissitudes of the world! Parumaci comforts her mother to have a peaceful life in the future. Before he finished speaking, he suddenly stood up and kicked the red-leafed karu sʉrʉ (sandal wood) trunk. The leaves fell, one after another, and they instantly piled up and became houses. With another kick, all the fallen leaves became human, the number of which is unknown to hundreds. Parumaci became their leader and formed a settlement ever since

Ritual (in Kanakanavu language)

  • Mikongu. (A festival celebrating the harvest of millet)

It is rumored that the millet seeds were given to the Kanakanavu by the little dwarfs, who called the little dwarves "Tapucarake". According to the respectable old man, they were short in stature, climbed onto tree beans, their branches would only bend and not collapse, and they had always lived in a hole in the ground. One year, humans had no food at all. In order to find food, a man from Kanakanavu digs in the jungle. He accidentally digs into the place where the dwarf lives and sinks into a cave. The dwarf didn't hurt him. They lived in it for a long time. The dwarf taught him farming and planting methods. When the Kanakanavu man wanted to go back, they presented a pack of millet seeds. The dwarf said, "After you harvest the millet, please Invite us, we are going to try your new rice!" The Kanakanavu people invite them and entertain them every year as agreed. Later, the dwarves disappeared suddenly and no one knew their whereabouts, but the Kanakanavu did not forget to prepare food for them. Although they never reappeared, the tribe still hold the ritual according to tradition.
